What to Wear for Your Professional Headshot in Corpus Christi

Professional headshot of a smiling woman in a red satin blouse against a gray backdrop, Corpus ChristiPicture

Start here: simple, solid, and well fitted

The best thing to wear for a professional headshot is a solid, well-fitted top in a color that flatters your skin tone. That one sentence covers most of it. The rest of this guide explains why, and how to fine-tune your outfit for your industry and our Gulf Coast weather.

Your headshot is often the first impression people get of you. It sits on LinkedIn, your company website, conference programs, realtor signs, and email signatures. After nearly two decades photographing people here in Corpus Christi, I can tell you that clothing is the part of a headshot session clients worry about most. It's also the easiest part to get right.

The goal is simple. Your clothes should support your face, not compete with it. When someone looks at your headshot, they should see you first.

Best colors for headshots (and which to skip)

Solid, medium-to-deep colors photograph best in a headshot. They keep attention on your face and look polished at any size, from a billboard to a tiny LinkedIn thumbnail.

Colors that work well:

  • Navy, charcoal, and deep gray
  • Jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, burgundy, and plum
  • Soft neutrals like camel, taupe, and warm cream
  • Muted blues and dusty greens

Colors and patterns to think twice about:

  • Busy patterns. Small checks, tight stripes, and houndstooth can create a flickering effect on screens called moiré.
  • Bright white. It can overpower your face and lose detail. A soft ivory or off-white under a jacket is safer.
  • Neon colors. They reflect color onto your skin and pull the eye away from your expression.
  • Large logos or graphics. They date the photo and distract from you.

Bold color can be your signature. A rich, solid red, cobalt, or emerald photographs beautifully when it's one confident color with no pattern. It works best when your makeup or accessories coordinate, so the whole look feels intentional. Even satin and silk can look stunning with the right studio lighting, which is where an experienced headshot photographer makes the difference.

If you're not sure which colors suit you, look at the clothes people compliment you in. That's usually your answer.

Necklines, fit, and layers

A headshot is cropped close, so the neckline and shoulders do most of the work. Fit matters more than price.

  • Choose structured shoulders. A blazer, jacket, or tailored top gives your shoulders clean lines and instantly looks professional.
  • V-necks and open collars are flattering. They lengthen the neck and frame the face. Crew necks work too, especially under a jacket.
  • Skip strapless and spaghetti straps. In a tight crop, bare shoulders can look like you aren't wearing anything at all.
  • Watch the collar. Collars should lie flat and fit your neck. A gapping or too-tight collar is very visible up close.
  • Press everything. Wrinkles show more on camera than in the mirror. Steam or iron your outfit the night before.
  • Layers give you options. A jacket over a blouse or a sweater over a collared shirt lets us capture two looks in one session.

Bring two or three outfits if you can. It gives us room to choose what looks best on camera, and you'll have variety for different platforms.

Dress for your industry and your clients

Dress the way you would for an important meeting with your ideal client, then take it up one notch. Your headshot should look like the best version of you on a normal workday.

Industry What usually works
Law, finance, corporate leadership Dark suit or blazer, crisp shirt or blouse, minimal jewelry
Real estate and sales Blazer in a friendly color, approachable and polished
Healthcare and nursing Scrubs or a white coat if that's how patients see you, or business casual
Education and nonprofits Business casual, a cardigan or soft jacket
Creatives, coaches, and small business owners Your brand colors and personal style, still solid and well fitted
Trades and industrial A clean branded polo or work shirt that fits well

If you'll use one headshot everywhere, lean slightly more formal. A polished headshot works in casual settings, but a casual one can look out of place on a corporate bio page.

Hair, makeup, glasses, and grooming

Aim to look like yourself on a great day. Your headshot should match the person who walks into the meeting.

  • Haircuts: Get a trim about a week before your session, not the day before. Fresh cuts can look harsh for a few days.
  • Hair color: If you color your hair, touch up roots ahead of time. They show clearly in a close crop.
  • Makeup: Wear what you normally wear, just slightly more defined. Matte foundation and powder help control shine under lights.
  • Facial hair: Trim beards and mustaches a day or two before so the lines look clean but natural.
  • Glasses: If you wear glasses every day, wear them in your headshot. Modern anti-glare lenses help, and we can adjust lighting to reduce reflections.
  • Jewelry: Keep it simple. Small earrings and a single necklace look timeless; large statement pieces can pull focus.
  • Nails: If your hands may show in the frame, have clean, neutral nails.

Ask about hair and makeup when you book your headshot session so we can plan the day around your needs.

Corpus Christi tips: heat, humidity, and what to bring

Our Coastal Bend weather is hard on a pressed shirt and a fresh blowout. A little planning keeps you looking the way you did when you left the house.

  • Carry your outfit in. Hang it in the car and change at the studio, especially blazers and jackets. You'll arrive fresh instead of wrinkled and warm.
  • Plan for humidity. Bring a small brush, anti-frizz product, and hair ties or pins.
  • Blot, don't wipe. Blotting papers or powder handle shine without disturbing makeup.
  • Bring backups. A second top, a lint roller, and any accessories you're considering.
  • Arrive a few minutes early. Give yourself time to cool down, settle in, and relax. Relaxed faces make better headshots.

Quick checklist for your session: two or three pressed outfits on hangers, a lint roller, a brush or comb, powder or blotting papers, glasses if you wear them, and any jewelry you're deciding between.

Headshot FAQs

What is the best color to wear for a headshot?

Navy, charcoal, and jewel tones are the most reliable choices. They flatter most skin tones and keep attention on your face.

Should I wear white in my headshot?

Bright white can overpower your face and lose detail. Soft ivory or white layered under a darker jacket photographs better.

Can I wear a pattern in my headshot?

Subtle, large-scale patterns can work. Avoid small checks and thin stripes, which can create a distracting moiré effect on screens.

What should I wear for a LinkedIn headshot?

Wear what you'd wear to meet an important client: a solid, well-fitted top or blazer in a flattering color. Keep it simple so it reads clearly as a small thumbnail.

How many outfits should I bring to a headshot session?

Two or three is ideal. It gives you options for different platforms, like a formal look for your company bio and a softer look for social media.

What should my team wear for group headshots?

Ask everyone to wear solid colors at a similar level of formality. The headshots will look consistent side by side on your website.

Professional Headshots in Corpus Christi: What Businesses Actually Need

Professional Headshots in Corpus Christi: What Businesses Actually Need

Most people book a headshot because they need one, not because they want one. That is fine. The goal is to get it done well, once, and have images that work everywhere you need them for the next few years.

Wet Silver Photography is a portrait studio on S Staples Street in Corpus Christi. Headshots and marketing photography are a large part of what happens here, for solo professionals, small teams, and companies photographing forty people in a morning. Here is how it works and what to think about before you book.

What separates a professional headshot from a good phone photo

Phone cameras are excellent now. The difference is not resolution. It is these four things:

  • Lighting that shapes the face. Overhead office lighting puts shadows under the eyes. Studio lighting is placed to do the opposite.
  • Focal length. Portrait lenses render facial proportions accurately. Wide phone lenses push the nose forward and pull the ears back, which is why selfies rarely look like you.
  • Expression, coached. This is the part nobody expects. A usable headshot is a specific expression held for a fraction of a second, and it takes direction to get there.
  • Retouching with restraint. Skin cleaned up, stray hairs handled, nothing that makes you unrecognizable when you show up to the meeting.

Studio or on location?

Both are available, and the right answer depends on how you plan to use the images.

Studio sessions

Controlled light, clean backgrounds, and a consistent look across everyone photographed. If your team is going to be shown together on a website or in a pitch deck, studio work is the safer bet, because backgrounds and lighting match even when people come in on different days.

On location sessions

The photographer comes to your office, warehouse, clinic, or job site. This is the better choice when you want the environment in the frame, when the team is too large to send out one at a time, or when the images are doing double duty as marketing photography rather than just headshots.

Team and group headshot rates

Group pricing is published so you can budget without a phone call:

$65
Large groups, 40 or more people. Per person.
$125
Small groups. Per person, with the group photo included at no extra charge.
$499
On location group photo. Minimum.

If you only need a group photo and no individual headshots, that is priced at the per person rate times the number of people, less twenty percent. Three people in studio comes to $300.

Each person picks one image, which is retouched and delivered. Full group tiers are on the group rates page.

Beyond the headshot: marketing photography

A headshot answers one question, which is what you look like. Most businesses need more than that, and it is usually cheaper to capture it in the same visit than to book a second session later.

Worth adding to the shot list while the lights are already up:

  • Environmental portraits, meaning you at work rather than against a backdrop
  • Team photos, both the formal lineup and the loose version
  • Candid working shots for your website's about page and service pages
  • Detail images of your space, tools, or product, which fill out social posts and ads for months
  • Horizontal frames with clean space beside your subject for banners, billboards, and ad creative with text over them

That last one gets forgotten constantly. If images are headed for a billboard or a website hero, they need room for text. Say so before the shoot, not after.

What to wear to a headshot session

  • Solid colors photograph better than patterns. Tight patterns can shimmer on camera.
  • Bring two or three options in different necklines. Layers give you a second look in a minute.
  • Sleeves, generally. Bare arms draw the eye away from the face in a tight crop.
  • Choose colors that contrast with your background. Dark shirt on a dark background loses your shoulders entirely.
  • Press everything the night before. Wrinkles are visible at headshot resolution and retouching them is slow.
  • Bring your glasses if you wear them daily. Anti-glare lenses photograph best.
  • Book haircuts about a week ahead, not the day before.

For teams, a short note to staff about a color range keeps everyone looking like they work at the same company without anyone showing up in a uniform.

How the session works

Individual headshot sessions run efficiently. You are photographed, you see the images, and you choose what you want. Group and corporate days are scheduled in slots so people can step away from their desks and come back.

One thing to know before you choose: unpurchased images are not archived. Once you make your final selection, the unselected files are released rather than stored indefinitely. Choose the images you may want later while you are choosing at all.

Frequently asked questions

How much do professional headshots cost in Corpus Christi?

Group rates are published: $125 per person for small groups with the group photo included, and $65 per person for groups of forty or more. On location group photos have a $499 minimum. Individual session pricing is on the site.

How long does a headshot session take?

Individual sessions are short. For teams, people are scheduled in slots so a large group can be photographed in a single morning without shutting down the office.

Can you come to our office?

Yes. On location headshots and team photos travel throughout the Coastal Bend and South Texas. On location group photos start at $499.

How many images do I get?

In group sessions, each person selects one image, which is retouched and delivered. Individual sessions offer collections with more images.

Can I use the images in ads and on social media?

Yes. Tell the photographer where the images are going before the shoot so the framing leaves the right space for text and cropping.

What happens to the images I do not choose?

Unpurchased images are not archived. After your final selection, unselected files are released rather than stored.

How far in advance should we book a team shoot?

Earlier is better for group days, since they take a large block of the calendar. Bring your deadline and it can usually be worked backward from there.

Booking a session

Whether it is one headshot or forty, the first step is a short conversation about how the images will be used. That determines almost everything else.
